Best SEO practices dictate that you must avoid the two common mistakes SEO’ers make in building backlinks which are:
1. Always linking directly to their target site.
2. Thinking they have to vary their keyword anchor text.
What I mean by stating “Always linking to their target site” is that the backlink targets the main target domain. For instance, instead of pointing a backlink to an intermediary ‘feeder’ website they point it directly to the main website as in the diagram below.
I am not stating that pointing backlinks is to the main site is totally wrong but to do it all the time is very ineffective. This is because you want to build link juice and link juice accumulates from one site to another when they are in daisy like chain. Additionally, you want to trigger the link juice from higher Page Ranked and Trusted websites so the precious juice flows to your main website.
To do it properly you actually want to randomise your backlinks and boost your backlinks with further backlinks, so the linking structure looks like the diagram below.
The feeder site ideally should be an aged domain (+2 years) with PR 3 or above, however it could be a web 2.o site, article on an article directory, YouTube video, press release or the countless variety of other websites. However, it has been highly tuned to target specific keywords which are contextual (related to your main site market area).
As a side note, I do not believe in the common belief that you are penalized for always using a specific anchor text in you backlinks. In all my testing, I never had the need to vary my anchor text to other related keywords. My recommendation is to stick to your keywords and vary them when you are statisfied the rankings for those keywords.
Lastly, the above diagram is very simplistic because you can have many more levels. In addition, the links can point to other feedsites and level 2 or 3 links can point to main domain. This kind of link structure can be like a spaghetti with links pointing all over the place, however, I recommend to start simple and keep it simple unless you are forced to do otherwise!
